Presents or Presence?

As we're in the midst of the frenzy of holiday shopping & decorating & cooking & parties & stress & hassle....I wonder which matters more to us - the presents we give or receive or the presence we give and receive? Our culture would tell you that it's all about the monetary value of our gifts. And we can drive ourselves crazy thinking we have to have this or have that particular gift for each different person on our lists. Yet, I believe that it's more about how we spend our time vs. how we spend our money. Both are often limited, or at the very least budgeted, resources. Time, especially in this hectic part of the year is even more precious. We each only have 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week (because who can actually rest during the holidays???). In the rush of doing things, we can often forget the gift of being PRESENT. Listening to old stories or reading new ones to young children can bring more joy than can be contained in any wrapping paper or bag. Taste testing cookies (that are store bought not necessarily homemade) and relishing the flavors can be more beautiful that the latest haute couture. Watching It's a Wonderful Life for the 100th time on TV with loved ones has more meaning that catching the latest movie at the theatre. So give yourself an extra special package this year - take the time to capture every moment and be PRESENT for every one. I can guarantee you that you won't be disappointed.
